Breakout Outfielders

Ian Happ, ChC, 29

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

71 GP, 14 HR, 7 SB, .250 AVG, .822 OPS. He also tied for fourth with 53 Runs.

2023 Splits:

411 AB vs Right, 16 HR, .258 AVG, .834 OPS

169 AB vs Left, 5 HR, .225 AVG, .695 OPS

Happ hits slightly better at away than home.

Note:

While Happ is a switch hitter batting around the middle of the order, if he could improve his numbers vs lefties, he may see himself somewhere higher in the order. This would generate more RBI opportunities. The last three years he has been pretty consistent, and considering his second half surge last year, he may be finding another gear. At his draft capital, he could be a good ROI.

Seiya Suzuki, ChC, 29

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

67 GP, Great and balanced counting stats. .313 AVG, .938 OPS.

2023 Splits:

Suzuki had better power vs. righties and better average vs. lefties.

238 AB Home, 13 doubles, 9 HR, .269 AVG, .786 OPS.

277 AB Away, 18 doubles, 11 HR, .300 AVG, .898 OPS.

Note:

Playing his early career in Japan, Suzuki really turned it up at the end of 2023. With similar enough numbers righty/lefty and home/away, he will continue to thrive at the top third of the Cubbies lineup, currently batting second. He is a rather balanced overall hitter with 20 HR, 6 SB, .285 AVG, .842 OPS last season.

Chas McCormick, Hou, 28

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

64 GP, a very balanced second half with good counting stats, 14 HR, 10 SB, .285 AVG, .874 OPS.

2023 Splits:

280 AB vs Right, 13 HR, 16 SB, .250 AVG, .771 OPS

123 AB vs Left, 9 HR, 3 SB, .325 AVG, .1.008 OPS

Home/Away splits very balanced.

Note:

Going into his age 28 season, McCormick may be emerging as a pretty good offensive tool for the potent Houston Astros. His line vs righties is good enough to keep him in the lineup accumulating at bats so that when the lefty comes around he can feast.

Lane Thomas, Was, 28

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

68 GP, 14 HR, 12 SB, .223 AVG, .705 OPS.

2023 Splits:

450 AB vs Right, 19 HR, 11 SB, .242 AVG, .722 OPS

178 AB vs Left, 9 HR, 9 SB, .331 AVG, .950 OPS

298 AB Home, 15 HR, 14 SB, .312 AVG, .893 OPS

330 AB Away, 13 HR, 6 SB, .227 AVG, .691 OPS

Note:

Lane is a good power speed threat. In the full 2023 campaign he accumulated 28 HR and 20 SB. Combine 101 runs and 86 RBIs, the Nationals have gotten the better end of the 2021 Jon Lester to the Cardinals trade. Getting reliable at bats has helped develop Lane who has played in just two full seasons during his major league career.

Kerry Carpenter, Det, 26

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

71 GP, 12 HR, 6 SB, .287 AVG, .817 OPS.

2023 Splits:

350 AB vs Right, 18 HR, .286 AVG, .842 OPS

68 AB vs Left, 2 HR, .235 AVG, .657 OPS

212 AB Home, 6 HR, .311 AVG, .809 OPS

206 AB Away, 14 HR, .243 AVG, .816 OPS

Clearly better vs righties. The home/away splits are certainly interesting.

Note:

Carpenter’s final 2023 line was very good for the draft capital it took to acquire him. Although, not seeing many at bats vs. lefties will force you to carry another right fielder. If he could only improve vs lefties, he would be a mainstay in the middle of a underrated Tiger’s team.

James Outman, LaD, 26

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

68 GP, 12 HR, 7 SB, .264 AVG, .851 OPS.

2023 Splits:

353 AB vs Right, 22 HR, .246 AVG, .837 OPS

130 AB vs Left, 1 HR, .254 AVG, .670 OPS

More HR away, but everything else similar home/away. 8 HR in 225 AB Home. 15 HR in 258 AB Away.

Note:

Outman finds himself as the everyday centerfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers after a very promising first full season where he batted .248 with 23 HR and 16 SB. If he could continue to produce at that level, the Dodgers will have atleast another several years of a talented core, making deep runs into the late fall. He needs to improve vs. lefties.

Brandon Nimmo, NyM, 31

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

64 GP, .284 AVG, .859 OPS.

2023 Splits:

Very consistent across the board career wise.

Note:

Brandon Nimmo bats first for the NY Mets and will certainly give you the runs. If OBP or OPS is a category in your league, Nimmo will rank higher than usual and give you a strong ROI. Nimmo has a career .269 AVG, .380 OBP, .446 SLG which gives him a career .826 OPS.
