Breakout First Basemen

Spencer Torkelson, Det, 24

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

72 GP, 19 HR, .238 Avg, .816 OPS. His line, post all star break at his position, ranks him third in HR and tied for 5th in RBI with 49.

2023 Splits:

297 AB Home, 11 HR, .219 Avg, .701 OPS

309 AB Away, 20 HR, .246 Avg, .818 OPS

Last year was Torkelson’s first full year, posting similar numbers vs. righties or lefties.

Note:

Despite being a huge fan of Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers are ready for a full rebuild. Shedding Miggy’s $32M cap hit will help. Freeing up first and DH, we can expect Torkelson to fill in very nicely... if you are fine taking a power pat hitting .235. I know I am.

Yandy Diaz, TB, 32

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

59 GP, Avg. 338. Only Freddie Freeman had a higher batting average at first base during the second half. Yandy ranked 6th in OPS in that same stretch, posting .944.

2023 Splits:

Yandy is no sleeper, he mashed last year. Splits were very good all around.

Note:

Diaz is projected to leadoff for the Rays this year. Why not with a career .382 OBP?

Ryan Mountcastle, Bal, 27

All-Star Break 2023 to End of Season:

54 GP, .322 AVG, .893 OPS

2023 Splits:

281 AB vs Right, 6 HR, 33 RBI, .235 AVG, .644 OPS

142 AB vs Left, 12 HR, 35 RBI, .338 AVG, 1.060 OPS

Home/Away normal

Note:

In an injury-shortened season, Mountcastle was still able to put up 18 homers and 68 RBIs. Coming into this season completely healthy, 25-30 HRs is within reach. Splitting time between first and DH, he is expected to hit better against righties.
